Vellichor, wooden wick, soy wax candle, Used Book shop scented candle

    Top: Vellum, Aged Paper
Middle: Antique Rugs, Old Hardwoods, Spice
    Base: Worn Leather, Dust, Tobacco

Not to be confused with our Old Books candle, this new scent is of a Used Book Shop, VERY different but one that pairs wonderfully with our Old Books scent.

    This candle is EVERYTHING!

Its nostalgic (but your brain really doesn't know for what), comforting, mysterious...

    THE SCENT

My favorite smell in all the world, that's saying a lot for me! Old books, new books, the distinctive smells that happens when ink hits paper, centuries old wooden floors, must, dusty shelves, radiant heat, stale coffee, worn leather and a little of whatever that second hand store smell is.

This scent is nostalgic, mysterious, woody, warm with a little bit of spice and musk.

I lived in the city once, long ago and just between two busy roads was a little weird neighborhood with a Seven 11, a church, donut shop, tattoo spot, a bbq joint, church and a perfect little book shop attached to a pawn shop. It had a tattered looking outside, choppy brick, flaking gold leaf letters on the window and dim, flickering lights inviting you in as you walk past on that rainy Sunday. I LOVED the smell of that place!

It's a wonderful place to sneak off to, grab a cup of coffee and a donut on the way and spend the day flipping through pages, admiring covers and finding books on things you never dreamed of before.

It smells of old moldy paper, worn leather covers and club chairs, oil lamps, spices, tobacco...heaven.

You enter to well worn wooden floors covered in equally loved and worn vintage rugs. There are shelves after shelves of all sorts of books. Well loved novels, encyclopedias, self help books, one of a kind books with hand made covers, gardening guides, maps rolled up in tubes, milk crates full of old magazines and booklets, text books with tattered dust covers, even a stack or two of old albums...anything you could want to read.

There are towers of paperbacks in corners and on the strange dark staircase that seems to leads to the unmarked basement where only the frequenters go for the really great finds.

There is a mezzanine accessed by a staircase you will only see if you enter the hall by the restrooms, that's where the best part is. Theres a little room at the top furnished with yard sale and hand-me-down treasures. A pair of tattered (but very comfy) club chairs, little side tables with reading lamps and a single window in the middle that looks out over the main drag in town.

The perfect place to find a cozy seat, pull your hood up and snuggle in with a new discovery, spending much too much time deciding to buy it (and several of its friends) just before the shopkeeper flashes the lights to let you know she'd like to leave for the night.

I miss little places like this one. If you are lucky enough to still have one or more of them in your town, visit them, buy something, keep the lights on. Trust me, you'll miss them when they are gone.

    THE WORD

    Vellichor (noun) (literary)

    /vell/ik/or/

Penned and coined by John Koenig(2013); he defines it this way-

    "VELLICHOR (n)

The strange wistfulness of used bookstores, which are somehow infused with the passage of time—filled with thousands of old books you’ll never have time to read, each of which is itself locked in its own era, bound and dated and papered over like an old room the author abandoned years ago, a hidden annex littered with thoughts left just as they were on the day they were captured."(1)

If you haven't read this book, grab a copy, you'll thank me later. Go to your local book shop, they'll be happy to see you and if they don't have it, they'll order it in for you!

    ----CANDLE BURNING INSTRUCTIONS----

The basics of lighting and enjoying your wooden wick candle are simple, but there are a few things to keep in mind:

✂It is IMPORTANT to trim a wooden wick to 1/8” – 3/16”, and no longer. If the wick is too long, the wax will not pull up the wick, and the flame will dim or even extinguish.

⛔️NEVER remove wax from around the wick, it starves the wick and creates a tunnel.

If your wooden wick is extinguishing shortly after lighting it, trimming is the problem.

Simply give it a trim with wick trimmers, nail clippers or simply snap the char off with your fingers or tap if off with your lighter and remove the wick bits, light it at the wax level and you'll be crackling away!!

    Frequently Asked Questions

How do I trim and light my wooden wick?

Check out our blog for care and burning tips
    www.teresalynns.com/blog

If lighting seems difficult, the wick is too far above the surface of the wax when the candle is initially lit. Always light at the wax level, not the top of the wick.

Solution: Make sure the wick is trimmed to be no longer than 1/8” – 3/16” / 6.4mm – 4.8mm above the wax. This seems counterintuitive, as we think a longer wick will make a larger flame, but it will not. The longer the wick, the harder it is for the wax to flow up to the top.

    Are Soy Candles Safe?

Now let’s talk about wax. Unless you are eating your candles (which you shouldn’t be) you don’t need to worry about them being produced with “Organic Soy wax”. This is good because organic soy wax doesn’t exist.

The process of converting the oil into a wax itself renders the wax ineligible for organic certification. Even if a manufacture used the 5-9% of soybeans grown in the USA that are Organic Bean, the process itself makes them not organic.
Should you worry about this? The simple answer is no, soy wax is safe. You should worry about a company that claims their soy candles are organic. We use wax made with only Renewable Midwest Grown Soybeans.

We use only phthalate free fragrance oils and essential oil blends in our products.

What do I do if my item is received damaged or is lost in transit?

We are happy to assist you with filing a claim with USPS if you received a damaged item or your package is lost.

FILING CLAIMS FOR DAMAGES is now the responsibility of the customer as USPS has changed their policies and requires the BUYER to present the damaged package along with proof of payment from your financial institute (all things we do not have).

Note: You must create an account with the USPS if you don’t already have one.

***When filing a claim with USPS, the damaged article, container, packaging, and any other items received must be presented to the Postal Service for inspection along with proof of payment from your financial institution. Be certain to safely save the entire box, label and all the contents.**

    Return to Sender packages

Packages received back to us as RTS (Return to Sender) may be resent at your request by purchasing a postage listing customized for your parcel and verified address.

We are not responsible for invalid addresses, forwarded mail or refused parcels and will not refund or pay return shipping.

Return postage will be calculated at our actual cost, not the discounted rate of $9.00 we offer on original purchases.

We will contact you via messages with a link to the shipping listing which will be active for 100 days.

After the 100 day period the listing will expire and the parcel contents will be donated to a local charity when appropriate.

    Allergy and sensitivities

We use products that may be made with nuts, dairy, soy, plant materials, essential oils and fragrances.

There is always the possibility for cross exposure within our studio/lab. People with sensitivities or allergies should consider avoiding scented and fragrances products.

Many of our item listings will include the focal scents/oils we use. We do not provide inclusive lists of our essentials oils used in all of our blends and formulas as many are proprietary (trade secrets) combinations specific to our brand.

How long do our candles burn?

The burn time for our candles varies based different variables, such as wax type. wick size, fragrance and type of vessel used. For smaller candles with smaller wicks, they burn an average 7-9 hours per ounce of wax. Larger candles may have large wicks which uses more wax to burn. They burn about 5-7 hours per ounce. Our speciality candles with beeswax blends may burn 7-9 hours per ounce, while our tea lights average 5-6 hours each.
Following our candle care and instruction guide will give you the best burn from each candle. Be sure to read and follow your candle care card included with your order.
